Euro Posts High BC Number

Aidan O'brien's Rip Van Winkle (Galileo) has earned the highest System Number of all BC Nominees, as was determined Tuesday morning.

The 3-year-old brings a two-race win streak into the $5,000,000 Classic. Those two wins were both Group 1's. Those triumphs were in July at Goodwood and the Queen Elizabeth II at Ascot in September.

Rip Van Winkle has lost three times this year, all races where Sea The Stars finished first.

The Coolmore color-barrer carries a System Number of 25.2.

American 3-Year-Old Filly Top 10

1. Rachel Alexandra
Resting queen needs no introduction
2. Careless JewelCheck Spelling
Alabama Champ could play a huge factor in the ladies classic
3. Gozzip Girl
Looks for revenge in today's QEII. #4 on this list is breathing down her throat.
4. Silver Reunion
Freaked on the grass at Saratoga, looks to legitimize that performance in the Valley View.
5. Sara Louise
Another Godolphin threat ran with Indian Blessing, that is saying something.
6. Miss World
Really improving Clement filly looks to beat Gozzip Girl without an * next to it.
7. Lady Shakespeare
Improving sister to the phenomenal Shakespeare is a trained by the scary sharp Roger Attfield. Could really climb up this list after QEII.
8. Shared Account
Second Motion filly on the list. Lake Placid winner may not want to be on the lead and that is where she found herself in the Garden City.
9. Hot Cha Cha
Arlington-based filly seems to show up.
10. Flashing
Godolphin-sprinter, does that best. The Test was just OK this year but she ran well against Informed Decision at Presque Isle. Looks to the Raven Run.

Sea The Stars: Legendary Status Already, Retires

Sea The Stars (Cape Cross) was retired on Tuesday October 13, dashing all hopes the Americans had of seeing the Euro star run in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

The 3-year-old, out of the great Urban Sea was a possible for America's richest race after his dominating performance in the $5,828,400 Arc de Triomphe on Oct 4. Had Sea The Stars been entered in the BC Classic on November 7, he would have carried a 26.3 System number in with him. You can compare that to last year's favorite, Curlin (19.4), and eventual winner Raven's Pass (20.4). The 3-year-old's number is the highest System number in recent memory.

Sea The Stars' siblings include the great Galileo, My Typhoon, Black Sam Bellamy and All Too Beautiful.

Meteore (6.8 System number) went off as the betting favorite. He was 6 lengths back of the winner.

Rail Trip got a great ride. Definitely good enough to win this, moved up a ton with the way the race came out. On paper, he was the lone speed, Tres Borrachos' connections acknowledged the lack of speed and improvised. They grabbed second in a race with a crafty strategy.

I thought Garrett Gomez had Life Is Sweet way to far back, running against boys in a slow race. The filly closed nicely but had way to much to do.

Dry Martini ($23.60) was the one to get up as high system number, It's A Bird (18) was washed-up and back peddling. That performance will make you question his drug-questioned past. In New York that stuff doesn't fly. Shaky.

The second, third and fourth high numbers all finished in the top four as the winner earned a high system number and should have jumped off the page at 11-1. Asiatic Boy (16.1) runs to his projected number again but continues on as a bridesmaid. Finallymadeit (14.8) also ran up to his number as he completed the $5,313 superfecta at 34-1.

Atomic Rain- 5.2

I Want Revenge (15.5) has taken it to another level on the dirt. Pioneerof the Nile (15.5) was twice better than 'Revenge' over the California synthetic surfaces. Then Revenge went east and established himself as the Derby favorite. He is a much better horse on Saturday's dirt surface. If Pioneerof the Nile does like his rival, they may duke it out. Interesting that Pioneer's connections (Mott & Baffert are both no-joke) have never tried him on dirt even when he was based on the east coast with Mott. I'll take I Want Revenge because I've seen him dominate on dirt. Pioneer has trained brilliantly over Churchill's dirt.

Desert Party (15) has grown into his $2,100,000 purchase price when he went to Dubai this winter. He began to show even more when he routed. If he runs back to his North American 2008 form (doubtful), he'll be nowhere close. If he runs like he did in the desert, he's dangerous.

If Dunkirk (14.3) catches Quality Road in the March 28 Florida Derby, I'd estimate a number around 16.5. He had to do a lot that day, but he did have the lead in the stretch, until Quality Road fought back and Dunkirk threw it in. Either way, that was only his third race, and they've ALL BEEN impressive. Awfully dangerous. Preakness?

West Side Bernie (12.8) was 1 1/2 lengths behind I Want Revenge in the Wood Memorial, and was 4-wide that day. However, 'Revenge' had much more trouble. His last three dirt races have been very respectable. Tremendous value in triples & superfectas.

I respect Joel Rosario and Russel Baze, but Mike Smith is as big of a big-time rider as it gets. He gets the call on Chocolate Candy (12.5), and may be the answer to his mount's wide journey troubles. If he's three wide (instead of five wide) in the Santa Anita Derby, maybe he beats tied-for-field-high Pioneerof the Nile that day. Same with December's Cash Call Futurity, closed like a car door that day while four wide. Beaten only by, you guessed it, Pioneer and I Want Revenge. In February I called Cali's 3-year-olds soft. Dead wrong.

Friesan Fire (12.1) has a huge shot. LOVED his Louisiana Derby. If he runs that way on Saturday he could win this. Plus Larry Jones rarely does any wrong, so I ignore the fact that no horse has won of this type of rest in however long its been.. Friesan Fire is your horse? You're live.

Pioneerof the Nile (outside) noses out I Want Revenge
(inside) at Hollywood Park in December. I Want Revenge
has a huge chance to get some on Saturday.

***CASUAL RACING FAN*** BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SERIOUS OUTLIERS, LOOK FOR SOME VALUE. THIS IS THE KENTUCKY DERBY, THERE ARE 20 STARTERS. TRAFFIC (AMONG MANY OTHER THINGS) IS ANNUALLY A HUGE PROBLEM IN THIS RACE.

Last 10 Derby Winner's System Numbers

Over the last ten seasons there has been a trend among the Kentucky Derby champions. All of them had an 11 rating or higher coming into the Derby.

Quality Road Out...Don't Forget About Him.

Quality Road's early Kentucky Derby number was a 17. That is due to change once the field is announced but wouldn't have strayed much from that number. For an early 3-year-old that is legitimate.

Compare it to the past Derby winners like Big Brown and Street Sense.

In 2008, Big Brown came into the Derby as a field-high 15.3.

2007's killer threesome of Street Sense (16.5 field-high), Curlin (15.8) and Hard Spun (13) all put on spectacular campaigns.

Quality Road's hoof issues are beginning to seem chronic. If they DO NOT derail him further, he is one to look out for. If they do, he is one we can put in the 'got away from us' category.

RESULTS: Keeneland Elkhorn

Friday's Fifth Third Elkhorn
(Horse; Pre-race System #)

1st- Spice Route- 16 (HIGHEST RATING)
2nd- Musketier- 10.3
3rd- Brass Hat- 12

Spice Route (16) ran like a horse with a 16 number, beating a solid field by 2-lengths. Muketier (10.3) ran big to complete the Roger Attfield exacta. The price on the winner($10.20) was absolutely lovely, given his edge on The System numbers. Spice Route is a very, very consistent horse who also drew field high numbers in his previous two starts.

(AE) Sudden War- 8.3
Transduction Gold- 8
(AE) Sir Dave- 8
Always First- 8
Sir Whimsey- 5.4
Embossed- 2.7

Roger Attfield's Spice Route (16) wins in the consistency category. Classy veterans like Champs Elysees (14.5) and Better Talk Now (13.7) have been very tough at times and both like to have something to run at. However, there isn't much speed here which means Buddy's Humor (14.5) can drop the anchor on them. Can he keep up for 12-furlongs? We'll see.

Edgar Prado and agent choose Attfield's Musketier (10.3) over field-high Spice Route (16). Interesting. Musketier has been consistent, but a level below these especially his stablemate.

Quasicobra (12.5) is on the rise. Expect the crafty Julien Leparoux to improvise on the expected slow pace.

Field-high Square Eddie (12) looks to overcome a 3-month layoff in this mediocre rendition of the Coolmore Lexington. He has beaten better horses than these before. The Pamplemousse and Midshipman are the only horses in N.A to have beaten him. Both were serious Derby threats before their injuries.

Keeneland April 11 Jenny Wiley 1 1/16m

Race 8 Grade II 8.5 furlongs turf
(Horse;Pre-race #)

Forever Together- 19
Visit- 15.5
Backseat Rhythm- 14.6
Rutherienne- 13.7
Kiss With A Twist- 11.2
I Lost My Choo- 10
Lady Carlock- 9.8
Ballymore Lady- 9.5
Rustic Flame- 6.7

This race screams Keeneland Spring. Definitely a cool one. The entire field will pray for a soft turf course in order to beat the favorite Forever Together (19). The Breeders' Cup winner has not lost since September when she ran into Woodbine's yielding turf in the Canadian. Sheppard won Thursday's Madison with a similar layoff.

Visit (15.5) is still looking for her break-out stateside race. As long as Frankel keeps her on the grass, it will come.

Backseat Rhythm (14.6) makes her first start with the McLaughlin barn- they seem to get all the nice ones. She is a grade I winner but has never beaten a mare like Sheppard's.

SHE'S BACK: Forever Together looks to return
to her super 2008 form.

RESULTS: Keeneland: Vinery Madison (G1)

Grade I $300,000 7 furlongs older f&m
(Horse;Pre-race System #)

1st- Informed Decision (13.3) (2nd Highest #)
2nd- Ventura (16) (Highest #)
3rd- Bear Now (6.7)

The top two finishers were and are so much better than the rest of this group. They're numbers lived up to that in an exciting finish Thursday.

Ventura (16) ran a long trip, Gomez had her tucked behind then swung out 5-wide to take a brief about 100 yards from the wire. John Velazquez on Informed Decision (13.3) straight up out-rode Gomez here. Velazquez saved ground and she dug gamely as her eyes met Ventura's.

System exacta($14.20) players were rewarded when the 5/2 shot necked out the 2/5 fave.

Keeneland Friday April 10 Makers Mark Mile

Keeneland Race 9: Grade I $300,000 1 mile turf
(Horse; Pre-race System #)

Just As Well: 10.3
Thorn Song: 10.1
Twilight Meteor: 9.8
Mr. Sidney: 8.6
Passager: 8.5
Fluke: 8
House Of Silver: 6.3

Good luck in this crap-shoot. Just As Well (10.3) looks like he is satisfied with being close, but eeks out the top # over Thorn Song (10.1). The latter looks to regain his Autumn form, likes Keeneland. Twilight Meteor (9.8) beat this field's high number down in Gulfstream last time. Bobby Frankel's Fluke (8) has improved in two U.S starts.

Monday, April 6, 2009

Thursday April 9 Keeneland: Vinery Madison (G1) older f&m

Vinery Madison 7 furlongs $300,000
(Horse; Pre-Race System #)

Ventura- 16
Informed Decision- 13.3
Bsharpsonata- 8.6
Proud Heiress- 8.2
Bear Now- 6.7
Dubai Majesty- 6.5
Authenticat- 6.2

Ventura (16) returns to her best distance (3-for-3, including a BC win) as she looks for a repeat win in the Vinery Madison. She comes back to Keeneland and immediately works a 4-furlong bullet. Very tough.

Informed Decision (13.3) makes her first start since winning the Raven Run here in the Fall. Trainer Sheppard guaranteed to break out soon.

RESULTS Gulfstream March 28

Florida Derby $750,000 Grade I
(Official Order of finish; Pre-race #)

1st Quality Road (11.5-Highest Rating)
2nd Dunkirk (9.6- Second Highest Rating)
3rd Theregoesjojo (7.9- Third Highest Rating)

System hits the straight triple as Quality Road (Elusive Quality) held off the chugging-Dunkirk (Unbridled's Song). Sent off as the second-choice, Quality Road was a steal, at a poultry 6-5, if you're playing System numbers being that he was 1.9 points higher than the second-high, Dunkirk.

With the early scratch of fourth-highest number Danger to Society, Stately Character moves up and completes the straight superfecta ($72.20) for The System.

Swale Stakes $150,000 Grade II
(Official Order of Finish; Pre-race #)

1st- This Ones for Phil (7.5- Third Highest Rating)
2nd- Big Drama (8.7- Highest Rating)
3rd- Custom for Carlos (8- Second Highest Rating)

System-high Big Drama (Montbrook) crossed the wire first and in a track record time of 1:20.88. However, two bumps in mid-stretch were considered severe enough to take the initial winner down.

Although this really screwed with straight Pick 3's and doubles, the boxed System triple ($51.60) was still live. Although the favorite moving up didn't help the payout.

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Saturday March 28: Florida Derby & Swale

Race 9 The Swale Stakes $150,000
(Horse; Pre-race System #)

Big Drama- 8.7
Custom for Carlos- 8
This Ones For Phil- 7.5
B Z Warrior- 6.3
Brave Victory- 4
Sabi Sabi- 3

Custom for Carlos (8) has ran beautifully in two career starts. The System has him rated slightly second behind the layoff shooter, Big Drama (8.7). This Ones for Phil (7.5) tries to regroup after setting the pace and fading in the FOY.

Race 10 Florida Derby $750,000
(Horse; Pre-Race System #)

Quality Road- 11.5
Dunkirk- 9.6
Theregoesjojo- 7.9
Danger to Society- 5.2
Stately Character- 4.6
Casey's On Call- 4
Europe- 3.5
Toby the Coal Man- 2.8
Sincero- 2.4

Can't wait to see how this plays out. Pletcher sending in a $2.7 million rabbit? What does that say about his hopes for Dunkirk (9.6)? Quality Road (11.5) was dynamite in the FOY. Can he repeat with an added furlong and turn? His number says so. Theregoesjojo (7.9) ran a solid second in the FOY behind Quality Road.

RESULTS; Santa Anita Saturday March 7

Santa Anita Oaks
(Horse; Pre-race System #)

1ST- Stardom Bound (13.1) (1st Highest Rating)
2ND- Third Dawn (2.5)
3RD- Hooh Why (7.4) (2nd Highest Rating)
4TH- Nan (5.9) (4th Highest Rating)

Stardom Bound had to work extremely hard for her fifth consecutive GI win. The Tapit 3-year-old swung 6-wide to catch the very game Third Dawn and Hooh Why. The latter (second highest rating) was nosed for the place spot, just a nose behind the winner. Big talking connections may have to evaluate future plans for their superior filly.

Frank Kilroe mile
(Horse; Pre-race #)

1ST- Gio Ponti (14.6) (3rd Highest Rating)
2ND- Ventura (18.7) (1st Highest Rating)
3RD- Dixie Chatter (8.9)
4TH- Global Hunter (11.6) (4th Highest Rating)

Gio Ponti was back on his surface and proved to be slightly better than super-filly Ventura on Saturday. The latter went off as the favorite and gave the eventual winner a break in mid-stretch when she dazed off for a step to allow Gio Ponti to pass her.

Scratch: Mast Track and Monterray Jazz.

Santa Anita Handicap
(Horse; Pre-race #)

1ST- Einstein (16) (1st highest rating)
2ND- Champs Elysses (14.3) (4th highest rating)
3RD- Matto Mondo (11)
4TH- Monba (8.7)

Field high Einstein was placed perfectly throughout by the cool Julien Leparoux. It was never really in doubt for the 7-year-old. Champs Elysses, virtually ignored, closed nicely to grab second. Court Vision (2nd highest) left himself too much to do and closed for fifth.

Scratch: Colonel John

Mr. Napper Tandy- 4.7

Ventura tackles the boys and earns a field, and day high rating of 18.7. Her inside post should not be too much of a problem given her running style. Artiste Royal (16.5) has showed he is better suited for longer distance, but is still dangerous. One of two stakes races that should be very competitive.

Good Luck with the rest of the Pick 6 and the Pick 4.

Can speed-freak Notonthesamepage (6.6) carry? Doubtful.
Is This Ones For Phil (7.5) for real or did he freak on Millions day? Your guess is as good as mine.
Is Beethoven (8.5) better suited for one turn?
Is Capt. Candyman Can (11) for real? I think so, the Wilkes gelding has been very consistent since tearing up Saratoga in his debut.

Delightful Kiss (12) tries the turf...before Dubai? Interesting option for the Hal's Hope impressive winner. I'll take my chances with the ever-improving Just As Well (10.8) for turf wizard Sheppard. Buddy's Humor (9.9) could get loose on the lead if Jose Vezcano can guide him from the outside slot.

A lot of options in here, should get some nice prices, monitor the board.

Presious Passion also won at Calder (wire-to-wire) and came back with a real nice effort Saturday.

Summary

Jack Spratt wasn't much of a surprise (just 2.5 off the high rating), but paid brilliantly ($30.80). Kopitar's (8.8) fade in mid-stretch was the surprise.

I'm going to call this race 'The Humbler'. Sunday's Sweetest Chant was stolen when Oilgonewile (3.3) wired the group of fillies as the rest of them dueled for second.

Saar Treaty (6) has improved drastically since stretching out two turns.

Weekend Strike (3.3) is out of Weekend Storm, who is a half sister to A.P Indy and a full sister to Summer Squall. This filly is also a half to Court Vision, who has emerged as a very nice turfer.

Kopitar (8.8) wowed me in the Keeneland Paddock before his debut on the Polytrack. He won professionally 15 minutes later paying $29.00.

Kopitar is by Military out of a Quest For Fame (over $1.8 million in earnings, won 1990 Epsom Derby) unraced mare named Vindicate. Vindicate's brother is Frankly Perfect, who earned over $1.2 million on the grass. The bred-for-grass gelding looks to make it a perfect 3-for-3 on Saturday in his first stakes try.

Tejida (8, second-highest rating) adjusted to her outside post-position and settled back to take the difficult allowance from off-the-pace. Long Approach (10) went wide into the first turn and that affected the field's highest rating, who was still able to finish third.
